We found this beauty about a year ago:
My husband decided he wanted to tackle this project, so I let him make all executive decisions (I desperately wanted to restore the canvas, but he had other ideas). After LOTS of sanding, extensive buffing of the metal, and coats of pure uncut tung oil mixed with mineral spirits in a 1:1 ratio with a VERY small amount of solvent based stain (he used golden oak); here is the finished result:
I LOVE it!
The finish he used coats the ENTIRE trunk (leather, metal, wood, everything).

That's beautiful...love the pewter detailing! Definitely worth all the work!
ReplyDeleteLove it! It turned out great. It makes me want to tackle the one I have in the grain bin.

This trunk is absolutely beautiful now! Great job!
ReplyDeleteOh, what a treasure! It looks beautiful now!
ReplyDeleteStunning! How did you get such a great finish on the hardware? Would love some details!
ReplyDeleteYour trunk is so pretty! It looks brand new!! I had a random question...I have a trunk that looks similar, my mom and I lined it with cedar planks when I was in high school, but the exterior is completely unfinished (we stripped off the old canvas). I was wondering how you got the hardware to be so shiny, and also what you sealed/stained it with! With 2 little ones the top of my trunk sees lots of toys, I'd love to protect it! If you wouldn't mind emailing me, I'd love to hear what you did! chiraspeers {at} gmail {dot} com Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone! I had no idea this would be such a popular post. I updated the details with the stain/finish mixture he used. Most of the work was the sanding and buffering of the metal.
